2008 National Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships

The 2008 American Powerlifting Committee National Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships were held June 6, 7, 8, 2008 in the beautiful city of Norfolk , Virginia .  The Brute Strength Gym was the venue and promoter and what a gym it is.  20,000 square feet of hard core equipment with permanent platforms for powerlifting contests.   Thanks go out to the owners Dr. Dave Peters and wife Liz Peters and Gayle Schroeder, the meet director.  Great spotting an loading by Ryan Horn, D J Bognar, Kirby Gank, Terrence Gauthier, Rob Neel, Derrek Verret, Shane Hernandez, Justin Evans, Andrew Bazemore, James Heely, William Gray, Moses Bazemore, Hernandez Garco, Thomas Dillard, Shane Hernandez, and Dave Peters.  At the smooth running officiating table was Amy Strickland, Teresa Lancaster , and Paul Bossi.  Mcs were Rob Neel and Paul Bossi.  Judges were James Rouse, Rob Neel. Gayle Schroeder,  Stephen Parkhurst, Mike Kidd, Tom Bowman, and L B Baker.  

Leading off in the women’s open division and master’s 45-49 we have Bonnie Aerts in the 56kg weight class with a squat of 75kg, bench press of 50kg, deadlift 106kg with a total of 231kg.   Stella Krupinski had a great day in the 82.5kg open and master’s 45-49 class with a squat of 252.5kg, bench press 140kg, deadlift  210kg with the winning total of 602.5kg and four WUAP World records.  In the 90kg women’s open and master’s 40-44 class Krista Ford had a fantastic day with a personal best and a WUAP world record squat of 272.5kg.  After recent shoulder surgery on both shoulders she still managed a 115kg bench press, a 227.5kg deadlift for a world record total of 615kg.  In the women’s teenage 13-15 class Caitlin Hanouser won the 75kg class with a squat of 72.5kg, bench press 42.5kg, deadlift 95kg, finishing the day with a total of 210kg.

In the men’s division we have Ernest Milan in the open and men’s master 60-64 class.  Ernesto is amazing, easily winning the open and Master best lifter awards setting WUAP World records along the way.  At 51.6kg body weight, 52kg class, he had a squat of 200kg, almost 4 times body weight, a bench press of 105kg, deadlift 190kg, to total 495kg.   In the teenage division Jason Gordon won the 16-17, 75kg class with a squat of 170kg, bench press 82.5kg, deadlift 152.5kg, to total 405kg.   In the 125kg class, 16-17 division Reese Bulmash continues to push the limits with WUAP world records of squat 352.5kg, bench press 170kg, deadlift 290kg, for the winning total of 812.5kg.  In his second contest Tyler Brown continues to improve in the 140+ class, 16-17 division with a WUAP world record squat of 295kg, bench press 182.5kg, world record deadlift 215kg, and a world record winning total of 692.5kg.

In the 82.5kg master’s 50-54 division Ronnie Baker had a great day winning his class with WUAP world records of squat 252.5kg, bench press 175kg, deadlift 232.5kg, to total 657.5kg.  Danny Overbay won the master’s 45-49 division, 90kg class with a squat of 277.5kg, bench 160kg, deadlift 235kg total 672.5kg.  Steve Kylis went up a weight class to win the 90kg, master’s division, with a world record squat of 235kg, bench press 162.5kg, finishing with world records of deadlift 227.5kg and total 617.5kg.  In the 100kg open class Marcus Brandon is back with a strong squat of 335kg, bench press WUAP world record 292.5kg and deadlift 305kg for the winning total of 932.5kg.  Thomas Bowman came on strong with 4 WUAP world records of squat 335kg, bench press 192.5kg, deadlift 290kg and a winning total of 817.5kg.  In the 110kg open class Stephen Parkhurst come on strong with a squat of 335kg but suffered a quad injury and finished the day with token lifts.  In the 125kg master’s 45-49 class Greg Gordon won over Al Hunter by the lighter body weight.  Greg had a squat of 320kg compared to Al’s 335kg.  The bench press told the story.  Greg had a bench of 240kg over Al’s 187.5.  In the deadlift Greg had 237.5kg compared to Al’s 275kg, both finishing with 797.5kg.  In the open 125kg class Justin Evans won with a squat of 302.5kg, bench press 210kg, deadlift 250kg to total 762.5kg, followed by Terry Eller with a squat of 280kg, bench press 230kg and deadlift 235kg to total 745kg.  In the 45-49, 125kg class Rocky Tilson was another casualty with a strained pec muscle after a fine squat of 292.5kg finishing the day with token lifts.  Alan Aerts gained weight to get to the 140kg master’s 50-54 and open class to make American Records in the master’s division.  Alan had a squat of 165kg, bench press 205kg, deadlift 251kg with thw winning total of 621kg.     

In the Bench Press Championships Bonnie Aerts of California leads of in the women’s open and master’s 45-49 age group, 56kg weight class with the winning 50kg bench press.  Sonji Baldwin of Atlanta, Georgia won the open 75kg class with a new WUAP world record of 182.5kg.  George Bradley of Gainesville, Georgia won the men’s master 50-54 group, 60kg class with a WUAP world record 92.5kg.  Team mate Gary Glenn won the 82.5kg, 50-54 age group with 155kg.  Tom Sisk had a strong winning 130kg bench in the 90kg, 70-74 age group.  In the open 100kg class Mark Arnold of Georgia won with a strong 237.5kg over Shawn Booth who finished with 142.5kg.  Carl Tiller was unsuccessful in 3 attempts.  Wakelain Stoneman won the open 110kg class with 160kg and in the sub-master’s 110kg class Roderick Thomas won with 240kg.  Alan Aerts of California won the master’s 50-54 and open 140kg class with 202.5kg for an American record.  Tyler Brown of Georgia won the teenager 16-17, 140+ class with 142.5kg.
